When I lived in Malta, there was a phrase I heard often — same same but different. It's one of those expressions that perfectly captures something you can't quite say any other way. And it's exactly how I think about spirulina and chlorella.
Both are algae. Both are extraordinary sources of nutrition. Both are part of my daily routine. But they're not the same — and that's precisely why I take them together. Between them, they cover the broadest spectrum of plant-based nutrition I know of. And when you add a third — a spermidine-rich chlorella grown specifically for its cellular rejuvenation properties — you have what I consider the most complete algae stack available.
Same Same But Different: Spirulina vs Chlorella
Spirulina is a blue-green algae — technically a cyanobacterium — with a soft cell wall that makes it immediately bioavailable. Chlorella is a green algae with a tough outer cell wall that must be cracked to release its nutrients (which is why cracked cell wall chlorella matters so much). Both are nutritional powerhouses, but their profiles are subtly different and beautifully complementary.
Spirulina is exceptionally high in protein — around 60–70% by dry weight — and is one of the richest plant sources of the antioxidant phycocyanin, which gives it its distinctive blue-green colour. It's also a good source of B vitamins, iron, and essential fatty acids including GLA (gamma-linolenic acid).
Chlorella, by contrast, contains more chlorophyll than any other food on earth, has a unique compound called Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), and is particularly effective at binding to and removing heavy metals and toxins from the body. It's also one of the few plant-based sources of active B12.
Together, they fill each other's gaps. And then there's spermidine.
The Third Algae: Whole Food Spermidine
Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine compound that has become one of the most exciting areas of longevity research. It's a potent activator of autophagy — the body's cellular self-cleaning process, where damaged or dysfunctional cells are broken down and recycled. Autophagy declines significantly with age, and its decline is closely linked to the hallmarks of ageing: inflammation, cellular dysfunction, and reduced resilience.
Most spermidine supplements on the market are synthetic. Mine is different. Whole Food Spermidine is a chlorella specifically cultivated to produce an exceptionally high spermidine content — so you're getting spermidine in its natural whole food matrix, exactly as nature intended. The difference between a synthetic isolate and a whole food source is significant: the cofactors, enzymes, and supporting nutrients present in the whole food form support absorption and efficacy in ways a synthetic version simply can't replicate.
It's the same same but different principle applied again — it looks like chlorella, but it's been grown for a specific purpose, with a specific outcome.
What Spirulina Does for Your Body
Exceptional Protein & Amino Acids
Spirulina contains all the essential amino acids, making it a complete protein — rare in the plant world. For anyone eating a plant-rich diet, or simply wanting to support muscle repair, energy, and cellular function, this is significant. I add it to my morning routine alongside chlorella and notice the difference in sustained energy throughout the day.
Phycocyanin: The Antioxidant Unique to Spirulina
Phycocyanin is the pigment that makes spirulina blue-green, and it's one of the most potent antioxidants found in nature. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties and has been studied for its potential to support immune function, protect the liver, and reduce oxidative stress. You won't find it anywhere else.
Immune Support
Spirulina has been shown to stimulate the production of antibodies and activate natural killer cells — the immune system's first line of defence. For anyone who gets run down easily or wants to build resilience, it's one of the most effective natural immune supporters available.
Energy & Endurance
The combination of protein, B vitamins, and iron in spirulina makes it a natural energy booster — not in the stimulant sense, but in the deep, cellular sense. It supports mitochondrial function and helps the body produce and sustain energy more efficiently. Athletes have used it for decades for exactly this reason.
Detoxification
Like chlorella, spirulina supports the body's natural detoxification processes — though through slightly different mechanisms. Its antioxidant compounds help neutralise free radicals and reduce the toxic load on the liver, while its high chlorophyll content (second only to chlorella) supports bowel health and elimination.
GLA: The Anti-Inflammatory Fatty Acid
Spirulina is one of the few food sources of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) — an omega-6 fatty acid with potent anti-inflammatory properties. GLA is particularly relevant for women, as it supports hormonal balance, skin health, and the management of inflammation-related symptoms.
Why I Take All Three Every Day
I take spirulina, chlorella, and whole food spermidine every morning — and I genuinely believe this combination is one of the most powerful things I do for my health. Chlorella handles the deep detoxification, the gut health, the B12, the CGF. Spirulina brings the phycocyanin, the complete protein, the GLA, the immune activation. And the spermidine chlorella works at the deepest level of all — triggering autophagy, clearing out cellular debris, and supporting the kind of cellular renewal that underpins long-term health and vitality.
Same same but different. And together, complete.
How to Take Spirulina
Spirulina tablets are the easiest way to take it consistently — no taste, no mess, no blending required. Start with 3 tablets twice a day and build up gradually. Some people add spirulina powder to smoothies, juices, or energy balls, but I find tablets far more practical for daily use.
As with chlorella, quality matters. Look for spirulina that is third-party tested for heavy metals and contaminants — because algae absorbs from its environment, the source and testing standards of your supplier are everything.
