Wheatgrass has been celebrated as a health food for decades — and with good reason. I take it every single day; it's one of the non-negotiables in my routine. But what exactly is it, what does it do, and how do you choose between the different forms available? Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is the young shoots of the common wheat plant (Triticum aestivum) — the same plant whose golden stalks you see swaying in fields, just harvested much earlier in its growth cycle. Despite coming from a wheat plant, wheatgrass is naturally gluten-free when harvested at the young shoot stage, before the grain develops.
Its use as a health supplement dates back to the 1930s, when wheatgrass was actually certified as a complete food in the USA — meaning it contains everything the body needs to balance its own chemistry. Tablets of dried wheatgrass were even prescribed to patients at the time.
What Makes Wheatgrass So Remarkable?
Wheatgrass is extraordinarily nutrient-dense. It contains:
- Most known vitamins and minerals
- 297 proteins
- More than 80 active enzymes
- Fatty acids
- Phytonutrients, including chlorophyll
- Carotenoids and bioflavonoids
- RNA and DNA
- Immunomodulators and growth factors
One compound that sets wheatgrass apart from other grasses is P4D1 — a gluco-protein that acts as a powerful antioxidant. It is the first known substance shown in studies to promote DNA repair, and is also thought to help the body identify and attack damaged cells.
The Key Benefits of Wheatgrass
Supports Blood Health & Energy
Wheatgrass is made up of approximately 70% chlorophyll — a molecule remarkably similar in structure to haemoglobin, the compound in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. Wheatgrass also shares the same pH level as human blood (7.35), making it highly compatible with our biology. This makes it a natural energiser, supporting more efficient oxygenation and cellular processes, and potentially beneficial for conditions like anaemia.
Detoxification & Cleansing
Wheatgrass is thought to help chelate — or bind — toxins and heavy metals in the body, making them easier to expel. Its high chlorophyll content supports liver and colon health, and it has been shown to help restore normal digestive processes, particularly in those experiencing constipation, bloating, or IBS.
Gut Health
Gut health was actually the reason I first started taking wheatgrass. I was struggling with IBS and acid reflux, and the improvement was almost immediate — it worked straight away in a way that genuinely surprised me. I've since learned why: wheatgrass is a prebiotic food, creating the conditions for beneficial bacteria to flourish, and it contains digestive enzymes that are naturally depleted with age. Its alkalising properties also help neutralise excess stomach acid, which is why it can be so effective for acid reflux. It's now a permanent fixture in my daily routine for this reason alone — quite apart from everything else it does.
Alkalising Properties
Wheatgrass is naturally alkaline, helping to counteract excess acidity in the body — a common issue with modern diets. An alkaline environment is associated with reduced inflammation and better overall health.
Antioxidant & Anti-Ageing Support
Wheatgrass has well-documented free radical scavenging abilities, helping to reduce oxidative stress — a key driver of cellular ageing. It has also shown promising effects on blood sugar and cholesterol levels, both of which place significant stress on the body over time.
Choosing Your Wheatgrass: Standard vs Premium
Not all wheatgrass is equal — and there are now two distinct forms worth knowing about.
Organic Wheatgrass Powder — The Daily Foundation
Our Organic Wheatgrass Powder is grown outdoors on a small farm on New Zealand's South Island — one of the cleanest, most pristine environments on earth. New Zealand is entirely nuclear-free, and the farm operates to strict organic soil association standards. The high mineral content of the soil and purity of the air produce a wheatgrass of exceptional potency, ground finely enough to mix easily with water. This is a brilliant everyday option and the one I started with.
Raw Kamut Khorasan Wheatgrass Juice Powder — The Premium Upgrade
Kamut khorasan is an ancient grain variety — one of the oldest cultivated wheats in the world — and its wheatgrass is in a different league. Higher in minerals, richer in nutrients, and processed as a juice powder rather than a whole grass powder, which means the fibre has been removed. This makes it significantly easier to digest, more concentrated, and noticeably smoother and milder in taste — a real difference if you've ever found standard wheatgrass a little challenging on the palate.
I've switched to the Raw Kamut Khorasan Wheatgrass Juice Powder as my daily go-to. It also comes in a brilliant travel size — I never leave home without it. If you're serious about your wheatgrass practice, this is the one to upgrade to.
Both are available in my shop — start with whichever feels right for you, and feel free to get in touch if you'd like guidance on which is best for your needs.
